What is a Hashtag? 

Ok, let's use the example of a book's contents page. The contents page gives a title of a chapter and the page on which the chapter is located. Then, there might be smaller breakdowns of the chapters and their page numbers. A hashtag is similar in the sense that it shows others to your 'chapter' based on the 'title' you gave to the hashtag!


Is Hashtags about Quality or Quantity?

The number of hashtags that you put up is not the most important thing, but rather the relevancy to your topic and content that makes a good hashtag. And just because the social media guidelines says 20 hashtag limit, it doesn't mean you must write 20 hashtags. The more precise and accurate hashtag (i.e. quality hashtags) to your content, the higher your chances of hits!

      THE PHILOSOPHY OF A HASHTAG 

      Hashtags can provide much needed information of your business, leisure, hobby to the right customers, fans, friends and foes alike! So, how do one use hashtags? Hashtags can be used for:
      1. Real-time interaction 
      2. Show your expertise
      3. Connect with interested parties of your topic
      4. Create a social media campaign
      5. Brand awareness
      6. What is trending – hourly, daily, weekly
      7. Finding user-generated content

      Hashtags should be:
      1. Easy to spell
      2. Easy to remember
      3. Without spaces (e.g. #myworld and not #my world)
      4. Clear and not rude/vulgar (preferably)
      5. Unique, not used by others for another topic
      6. Doesn’t spell something awkward or potentially embarrassing
      7. Make others interested to check your contents
      8. Try to get people involved like using the #teamCaffeNero if you want them to join your online coffee shop Caffe Nero!

          EXAMPLE OF HASHTAGS GENERATED FOR THE TOPIC 

          "Klang Valley Properties"

          1. Even if the hashtags used in your particular country are mostly English, its advisable to use at least one hashtag in the local language of the region you are targeting 
          2. Using the location Malaysia, first, cut and paste the hashtag for the local Malay language word  'rumah' for house or property
          3. cut and paste the hashtags given below in HASHTAGS EXAMPLES for specific property that you want.
          4. remember, 
            1. Instagram: allows 30 hashtags BUT stick to no more than 11 hashtags 
            2. Facebook: 1 or 2 hashtags gets you most interactions. more than 2 hashtags lowers your chances  of interactions by nearly 20%
            3. Linkedin: being a professionals network, best practice is between 3 to 5 hashtags
            4. Youtube: (from Google support pages) says no more than 15 hashtags can be in the title or description of a video
            5. Twitter: where 'hashtags' came into existence suggest a limit of 2 hashtags per tweet
            6. Pintrest: limits up-to 20 hashtags
