Lotus Elise S1 (Mark 1) 1.8L Rover Engine
Some months back, I took on a project to re-furbish a Lotus Elise Mark 1 that I bought. It was laying in a garage and sadly needed loads of work and repair. In my opinion, a Lotus doesn't deserve to be left alone not wanted and unable to perform it's duties as one helluva drive. Like a friend of mine said once, "driving a Lotus is like having sex in the middle of the road while other cars passing by are watching you!"
Here it is at it's first stage:
The car paint was white in colour and lights were pretty worn out. Decided to change the paint colour to titanium silver and add a modern look to the lights.
So let's start with the photos of the preparation done for painting:
Note that the lights and hard-top was removed so as to do a complete sand paper job on the body and get a thorough paint work.
How to remove the front lights:
NOTE: always be gentle when dealing with your Lotus especially screws. Where ever possible, apply WD40 to loosen screws or joints as cracks can appear easily.
This is all for now until the next post.

How to remove the front lights:
- First turn the steering wheel all the way to one side. The wheel which moves inwards is the one whose light you need to remove first. One of the wheel will stick out; leave that side as it is.
- Pull gently on the wheel-arch liner from the front inner (a flat screwdriver will be a lot helpful).
- Look underneath the wheel-arch and two screws around the headlamp will be visible. Twist and remove the light bulb housing and remove the connecting wires.
- Now the tricky part. You need to get a screwdriver beneath the arch and the tire to loosen the screw. I had to spray WD40 before the screws will budge.
- Once the screws have been removed, put one hand in front to hold the light and push the light from the inside. Be careful not to damage the rubber lining and place the light in a box for safe keep.
- For the signal light, their are slightly further inside and again two sets of screws holds it to the body.
- Once one side is removed, turn the steering wheel completely in the opposite side and repeat the process
