Ivermectine for COVID-19?

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Health (MOH) has not ruled out the potential of approving the use of Ivermectin to treat COVID-19 patients if strong proof of its efficacy and negative effects is available.

Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Director-General of Health, said the MOH is now only allowing the use of Ivermectin on a 'offlabel' basis (medicine outside the label's indications and not yet or without the authorization of the regulatory authority or board) until a full study is carried out.

"Now we can use Ivermectin in the country, and the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Division (NPRA) has permitted the use of 'offlabel' anti-malaria and HIV medications, as was done previously."

"COVID-19: Don't rush to get Ivermectin right away"

Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medicine licenced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that is commonly used to treat a variety of neglected tropical diseases, including onchocerciasis, strongyloidiasis, and helminthiases.

MOH is also actively undertaking studies to discover the effectiveness and negative effects for COVID-19 patients in categories three, four, and five, according to Dr Noor Hisham.

"Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medication with antiviral properties that has been around since the 1970s. About four years ago, I advocated for its use in the treatment of dengue fever.

"I made this suggestion since Ivermectin has antiviral properties. We did research in Thailand, and preliminary findings reveal that the dose required to have this antiviral action is really large "he stated

He mentioned that Ivermectin has significant adverse effects such as ataxia or balance issues, seizures, and the like.

Dr. Noor Hisham said the topic was still under investigation when asked if the medicine might be used to treat COVID-19 patients.

"God willing, we've approved some off-label use," he remarked, "but only under the supervision of hospital professionals."

The Ministry of Health and the Institute for Clinical Research (ICR) started clinical studies at 12 hospitals within the ministry earlier this month to investigate the effects and effectiveness of Ivermectin for high-risk COVID-19 patients.

As previously stated by Dr. Noor Hisham, the World Health Organization (WHO) has only permitted Ivermectin to be used as a COVID-19 medication in research or clinical trials.

Many people, including specialised doctors and consumer groups, were disappointed by the MOH's rejection to utilise Ivermectin.
